Gotham: Penguin Will Be "More Vicious" When He Returns

04/24/2017 07:46 pm EDT

It took a while, but once Edward Nygma found out that Penguin had Isabella -- Kristin Kringle's lookalike and supposedly the love of his life (I'm not buying it) -- murdered, he drove the mayor insane by digging up his father's corpse and having Clayface pretend to be the ghost of his father. When he was done toying with his former friend, Nygma shot Penguin and let him (seemingly) drown in the river -- despite knowing that Penguin killed Isabella because he was jealous of her and wanted Nygma all to himself.

So what's next for them? "We're going to see the resolution of that feud, or that relationship, by the end of the season," executive producer John Stephens told TV Guide. "In terms of watching Penguin and how that comes about, if you're Nygma and you're going to set out to kill the Penguin, you probably better make sure he's dead."

When Penguin returns, how does getting shot and left for dead by the man he loves impact him? "It's going to turn him quite hard in the opposite direction," Stephens shared. "We really saw a softer side of Oswald through a lot of this year. The Oswald who rises again is going to be someone who is much darker and much more vicious. He's not letting anyone inside the way he did with Ed, in a way that he feels makes him weak."

The Court of Owls devises a new plan regarding the future of Gotham, as Gordon uncovers information about his father and uncle's past, connecting him back to the organization. Meanwhile, Bruce wakes up in the temple and learns of the Shaman's wish for him.

The regular cast features Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins, Sean Pertwee as Alfred, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma/the future Riddler, Jessica Lucas as Tabitha Galavan, Chris Chalk as Lucius Fox, Drew Powell as Butch Gilzean, Maggie Geha as the future Poison Ivy, Michael Chiklis as Detective Nathaniel Barnes, and Benedict Samuel as Mad Hatter.

The guest cast includes James Remar as Frank Gordon, John Doman as Carmine Falcone, Raymond J. Barry as Temple Shaman, and Leslie Hendrix as Kathryn.

The spring premiere of Gotham, which is titled "Heroes Rise: These Delicate and Dark Obsessions," will air Monday, May 1 at 8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT on FOX.
