Patty Jenkins Responds To James Cameron’s 'Wonder Woman' Critique

The DC Extended Universe fandom has been preoccupied by the Joker lately, but James Cameron turned their focus to Wonder Woman earlier today. An interview with the Avatar director went live where he criticized Wonder Woman for being a "step backwards" for women in film. However, it doesn't look like Patty Jenkins is taking the critique lying down.
The Wonder Woman director took to Twitter not long ago to address Cameron's controversial comments. The lengthy tweet refutes the accusation of Wonder Woman is an "objectified" heroine because of her so-called soft strength. You can read Jenkins' full response below:
"James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman. Strong women are great. His praise of my film Monster, and our portrayal of a strong yet damaged woman was so appreciated. But if women have to always be hard, tough and trouble to be strong, and we aren't free to be multidimensional or celebrate an icon of women everywhere because she is attractive and loving, then we haven't come very far have we. I believe women can and should be EVERYTHING just like male lead characters should be. There is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman. And the massive female audience who made the film a hit it is, can surely choose and judge their own icons of progress."
If you have yet to hear Cameron's thoughts on Wonder Woman, you only have to visit social media to discover the ire he's raised. The director told the Guardian during a recent chat that he finds all the praise given to the film as "misguided."
"All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood's been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided," the director admitted. "She's an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing!"
The DCEU fandom has risen up to clap back at Cameron's remarks, and those who support Wonder Woman aren't willing to let up. Diana Prince may wear a skin-tight costume and embrace her feminine looks, but the Amazon is also a no-nonsense fighter with impenetrable morals. Rather than closing herself off emotionally, Wonder Woman uses empathy and love to bolster her physical power, and her multifaceted personality is what led critics to praise the heroine as of late.
