The opening minutes of tonight's Powerless premiere showed the show's protagonist, Emily Locke, caught in the middle of a superhero battle on the way to work.

The battle in question was between DC hero Crimson Fox, and a very interesting foe - Jack O'Lantern.

The character is a legacy mantle that has several different origins in the comics. The original Jack O'Lantern, Daniel Cormac, was an Irish member of the Global Guardians and regularly appeared in Super Friends. He even helped Superman on a mission in DC Comics Presents #46.

After the Global Guardians were disbanded, Cormac joined an army in the fictional country of Bialya. It was there that he turned into the villain we see on Powerless, teaming up with the villain Queen Bee until his death.

After that, the mantle was succeeded by Marvin Noronsa and Liam McHugh, the later of whom being Cormac's cousin. This most recent adaptation of the character has mainly served as a hero and a member of the Ultramarine Corps in JLA.

Emily Locke lands her dream job as Director of Research and Development for Wayne Security in Charm City, home to super heroes and villains and citizens fed up with the collateral damage of their constant fighting. Full of confidence and big ideas, Emily quickly learns that her aspirations far exceed those of her new boss and officemates, so it will be up to her to lead the team toward their full potential and the realization that you don't need superpowers to be a hero.

The cast: Vanessa Hudgens, Alan Tudyk, Danny Pudi, Christina Kirk, and Ron Funches.

Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, Len Goldstein, Marc Buckland and Dean Lorey are executive producers of Powerless. Buckland served as the director of the pilot. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and is based on the characters from DC.
