Another Epic Name Swings Into 'The Flash' Director Conversation

A lot of names are suddenly being tossed around for potentially directing DC Films and Warner Brothers' The Flash movie.

First, Back to the Future genius Robert Zemeckis was billed as the frontrunner for the gig. Moments later, Kingsman and Wanted director Matthew Vaughn was announced as a candidate. Now, the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy Sam Raimi is reportedly in the mix.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Raimi, along with the other two candidates, have all met with the studio and are "strong contenders" for the job.

Raimi is best known for his work on Toby Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy which released its first entry in 2002 and its last in 2007, quickly becoming one of the most beloved live-action franchises for any comic book character. The director's more recent efforts include titles such as Oz the Great and Powerful, Drag Me to Hell, and an episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead.

The candidate names emerge after two directors have become attached to the project before departing over "creative differences." The most recent was Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, whose departure halted the film's development and is inevitably delaying its originally anticipated release date in summer 2018.

Famuyiwa's departure followed Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the first script and was set to make his directorial debut with the project.

According to the THR report's details, Zemeckis is "the current frontrunner."

"He is now focused on a new project, an untitled drama that will star Steve Carell and that will shoot this fall and that appeared to sideline him from the gig," the report said. "But now some sources say that Warners is willing to wait for him."

The Flash will be produced by Jon Berg and DC Comics mastermind Geoff Johns, who recently stepped in for much of the DC Extended Universe's overarching creative efforts.
