Supergirl has cast Floriana Lima in the series regular role of Maggie Sawyer. Created by John Byrne in 1987, Sawyer was introduced captain of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, which specializes in meta-human crime, in the DC Comics universe. She later entered a romantic relationship with Gotham City vigilante Batwoman, a.k.a. Kate Kane. The two were eventually engaged, though the marriage was never realized.

In Supergirl, Sawyer will be introduced as a member of the National City Police Department who becomes interested in cases involving aliens.

Lima's Sawyer is just one of several new faces popping up on Supergirl in Season 2. Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin will play Clark Kent/Superman, Ian Gomez will play reporter Snapper Carr, and former Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter will play the President of the United States.

Maggie Sawyer was previously played by Jill Teed on the CW series Smallville.

Lima's credits include the ABC drama The Family, NBC's Allegiance, and Fox's The Mob Doctor.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and J'onn J'onzz/the Martian Manhunter, and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. The series was developed by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler, and Andrew Kreisberg.

Supergirl is moving from CBS to the CW for its second season. It will fully join the shared TV universe of Arrow, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow when it is featured as part of the four-part crossover this season.

Supergirl Season 2 premieres Monday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
