'Titans' May Not Have Dick Grayson Be Nightwing At First

The upcoming Titans series cast its Dick Grayson with Brenton Thwaites but he might not be Nightwing just yet.

In DC Entertainment head Geoff Johns' statement to Deadline with the casting announcement, the executive producer of the Titans series never outright dubbed Thwaites' role as Nightwing.

"Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC universe, and it wasn't easy to find him but we have," Johns said. "Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman's former protégé and the Titans' future leader. We're extremely lucky he's chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character."

It is entirely possible, and potentially quite interesting, that Titans will see Dick Grayson evolving into a hero. It could be something similar to Bruce Wayne's journey to becoming Batman on Fox's Gotham, though not quite making its lead character so much younger than his heroic and iconic super hero alias.

Watching Thwaites carry out a journey of self-discovery, trying constantly earn his mantle as Nightwing will add a rich backstory to the character some fans may be unfamiliar with. It's an exciting concept assuming his costumes look good!

DC's Titans does not have a release date yet but is expected to debut next year on a new streaming service.
