Damon Lindelof Might Not Do Watchmen Reboot

News broke last month that the writer and producer of shows like the Leftovers and Lost was developing a new series for HBO based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' comic book classic Watchmen.

Now that the Leftovers has wrapped, many assumed Damon Lindelof would be diving into the development of the series based on Vertigo's seminal graphic novel. But Lindelof has some time off and he's not working on the project just yet.

In fact, he might not even work on it at all.

"As of right now, I haven't had any meetings with HBO about Watchmen," Lindelof said to TV Line. "I've been very vocal about my love for those twelve issues…that they were completely and totally inspiring for all the storytelling that I did subsequently, and that I owe a debt to it. I do feel like I have to weigh the balance of 'should it exist' before I decide to take it on, and I'm sort of in that process now. I hold the source material in such high regard, it would literally be the worst feeling in the world to screw it up…all I can say is I'm thinking about Watchmen a lot right now."

Lindelof said he was on vacation with his family without cellphone reception, and when he returned a week later he had hundreds of emails congratulating him on a job he had not yet accepted.

It looks like there might have been a grain of truth behind those earlier reports, but as of yet he has yet to officially take the job — if he does at all.

But it's probably safe to say that HBO will move forward on the project whether or not Lindelof is involved.

Watchmen was first published in 1986 and collected in 1987. Zack Snyder released the feature film incarnation in 2009, to mixed reviews and disappointing domestic box office. It starred Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Patrick Wilson.
