Wonder Woman Could Surpass Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 In Domestic Box Office

While a certain friendly neighborhood superhero swings into theaters this weekend, much of this summer's movie hype has been around two comic-based properties - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. And recent industry tracking indicates that the latter could possibly gross more than the former at the domestic box office.

While Guardians currently leads the domestic box office gross with almost $385 million, Wonder Woman is quickly closing the gap between the two. Despite being out for a month less in the box office than Guardians, Wonder Woman currently sits around $361.5 million, and according to Box Office Mojo, it shows no signs of slowing down.

Since the second week of Wonder Woman's release, it has outperformed Guardians in terms of weekly gross, just recently earning almost double of what the Marvel Studios film did in its fifth week. If this pattern were to continue, fans could easily see the DC Extended Universe film overtake Guardians' domestic gross - possibly within a matter of weeks.

International gross is another story altogether, with Guardians earning $857 million to Wonder Woman's current $738 million. Nevertheless, American audiences could very easily help Wonder Woman soar past expectations - and possibly be the best superhero film of the summer in the domestic box office.

Wonder Woman has an 86.52 ComicBook.com Composite Score and a 4.33 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Rating, making it the fourth-highest ranked comic book movie of all time among ComicBook.com readers. In Wonder Woman, before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. She will return as Wonder Woman alongside the DC Extended Universe's other heroes in Justice League, opening in November 2017.

Wonder Woman was directed by Patty Jenkins from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg, based on a story by Heinberg, Zack Snyder, and Jason Fuchs. Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, and Elena Anaya.

Wonder Woman is now playing in theaters.
