Wonder Woman Producer Reveals How Diana Is Different From Batman, Superman

When it comes to Hollywood, the industry is starting to feel increasingly saturated with superheroes of various kinds. Studios like Marvel and DC Entertainment continue to bring more heroes to life on the big screen, and audiences have started to exhibit signs of burnout. After all, moviegoers can only watch the same origin story so many times before they grow tired; Right, Spider-Man?
This summer, DC Entertainment is hoping to reinvent its origin stories when it brings Wonder Woman's solo film to theaters. The much-anticipated film will see Gal Gadot explore how Wonder Woman became a heroine during World War I, and the film's producer is now revealing how the character differs from heroes like Batman and Superman.
In an article from Sci-Fi Now, Charles Roven said Wonder Woman is in a league of her own because she's desired to be a hero for most of her life.
"If you look at Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and Iron Man, none of them started out going, 'I'm going to be a protector. I'm going to be a great warrior. I'm going to fulfill my destiny because I want to emulate the people I grew up hearing stories about, what they did for people, what they did for mankind, what they did for the people they were protecting when they couldn't protect themselves.'"
Continuing, Roven said, "They may grow into that role or reluctantly accept that role. They may even try to run from that before they get pulled into it."
"But I think Wonder Woman is the only one who starts out saying: 'That's my destiny and I'm going to pursue it and nothing is going to stop me from doing it, not even my mother…' I think her dynamic as a character, the way that she's insistent on making sure her destiny is one she makes for herself," he continued. "I think that defines her also as being a very different kind of superhero."
Wonder Woman's unique past is what prompted director Patty Jenkins to push for DC to give the character an origin film. After looking around the superhero genre, Jenkins said she didn't see anyone exploring a hero who believed they were predestined to save the world. Come this summer, that gap will finally be filled. Wonder Woman will be in theaters before fans realize, and the world will finally be done waiting for the icon to get her own solo live-action romp.
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.
Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Patty Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.
The DCEU continues when Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
