Wonder Woman Director Patty Jenkins Says They Wanted A Funny Film

Batman and Superman haven't become known for being funny on the big screen with Zack Snyder's take on the characters in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. David Ayer's Suicide Squad brought a bit of a lighter, more sarcastic tone to the DC Extended Universe but, still, the movies pride themselves on landing on the darker side of the comic book movie spectrum.

With Wonder Woman, this won't be the case. The first standalone film with a female hero in the lead will be brighter than its predecessors in the cinematic universe but also considerably funnier -- as seen in several trailers and clips.

Speaking to ComicBook.com at WonderCon over the weekend, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins shared her perspective of the film's approach to comedy.

"I think there's funny things in both of those films but we definitely went for making a funny film. I was always basing it on Superman I and on Indiana Jones. I wanted to make a classic film where you're laughing and you're in love with them and then they're off on a fun great adventure. It's definitely in the pursuit of our film."

As for how much knowledge fans will need to have regarding the movies which have come along prior to Wonder Woman, Jenkins simply says, "Zero."

"There are things here and there but it's a standalone film," Jenkins said. It should succeed to people who have seen Batman v Superman or not seen anything."
