Wonder Woman Director Has Mixed Feelings About Women-Only Screenings

The director of Wonder Woman has now weighed in on the controversial female-only screenings, and you might be surprised by her response.

Last month, to celebrate the first female-led superhero movie to be directed by a woman, Alamo Drafthouse announced special women-only screenings for Wonder Woman. It was also announced that the venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team working during those screenings would all be female.

For the most, women were thrilled with announcement, and according to the Drafthouse, the first screening that was offered sold out in less than three hours.

However, there was also a lot of outrage over the screenings. As you can guess, the criticism came from men -- for the most part -- who believe the screenings discriminated against male customers and male employees of the theater chain.

And what does Patty Jenkins think of the controversy? "I actually have sort of mixed feelings about all of that only because I do believe in not excluding anyone from anything," she told The Frame. "And so, on the one hand, I'm so delighted by those screenings and want people to be able to have those screenings. On the other hand, I can imagine being offended if I'm excluded from those screenings, particularly because Wonder Woman herself has a very, very passionate fan base, many of whom are men. And many of whom are men who are disenfranchised from their own gender or their own identity. And I would never want to leave them out of anything, you know? … I could switch to either side of the argument, but I certainly think it's wonderful … there have not been that many female-skewed things and certainly there have been many, many male. So I celebrate that."

Patty Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, Wonder Woman.
