Halo TV Series From Steven Spielberg Surprisingly Still In The Works Says Microsoft

Hey, remember that Halo television series we were supposed to getting? You're forgiven if you don't, as Microsoft hasn't provided any significant updates on the Steven Spielberg produced project in years. Many of us assumed the Halo series had simply been quietly cancelled, but, apparently, that isn't the case -- AR12Gaming recently asked Microsoft for an update on the project, and got this somewhat surprising response.

"Progress on the Halo Television Series continues. We want to ensure we're doing this the right way together with a team of creative partners (Steven Spielberg and Showtime) that can help us build the best Halo series that fans expect and deserve. We have no further details to share at this time."

Well, there you go – the Halo TV series isn't dead, although that's about as much as we know. Maybe Steven Spielberg is waiting to see how well his gaming-themed movie Ready Player One does before he jumps into a full-on video game adaptation?

The Halo TV series was announced in 2013 alongside the reveal of the Xbox One. Back then Microsoft was still hoping to position the Xbox One as an all-in-one entertainment device that would be home to a full slate of original movies and TV programming. That plan didn't turn out so well, as Microsoft shut down their Xbox Entertainment Studios in 2014, cancelling several in-development TV shows.

Will Halo ever come to television? It's hard to say – the whole franchise is on somewhat shaky ground right now. Halo 5: Guardians was a bit of a disappointment in terms of both critical reaction and sales, and series developer 343 Studios has said we won't be seeing the next entry in the series any time soon. Right now, getting the Halo video games back on their feet needs to be a higher priority than producing a TV show.
