This Handmade Pokemon Chess Set is Absolutely Stunning

3D printers are becoming a must-have for DIYers, especially when it comes to making intricate and interesting handmade pieces. Yesterday, a Thingiverse user posted their designs for a Pokemon chess set, made entirely via 3D printing.

Each chess piece features a different Pokemon from the original Pokemon games. While both the black and white sets use Pokemon like Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Eevee as pawns, the two sets use different Pokemon for the stronger pieces. The white set uses Mewtwo and Mew as the king and queen pieces, while the black set uses Nidoking and Nidoqueen.

Dratini, Dragonair, Ekans, and Arbok are the rooks and are shown wrapping their serpentine bodies around a castle. Growlithe, Arcanine, Vulpix, and Ninetails are the bishops in the set, while Horsea, Seadra, Ponyta, and Rapidash take the role of knights.

To help give the set a more natural feel, the original designer used woodfill PLA to make the set. Each piece was made in two parts: the Pokemon itself and a Poke Ball-shaped base filled with nuts to keep the pieces bottom-heavy. Each piece also features a different shape base to help players keep track of which Pokemon represent which type of chess piece.

Although usually a chess set like this would be one of a kind, the designer uploaded the entire set onto Thingiverse so that anyone with a 3D printer can replicate the set.

You can check out photos of the entire set in the photo gallery and then frantically ask a friend with a 3D printer to make it for you as a birthday present.
