Agents Of SHIELD EP On How The Framework Effects FitzSimmons

So your super science skills get manipulated and used for evil by your pseudo father figure, resulting in an archaic piece of magic being used to create a parallel reality where your best friends are happy but twisted and your girlfriend is dead.

How do you come back from that?

That's a question to be explored and possibly answered in the final episodes of Agents of SHIELD's fourth season, currently exploring the alternate reality established by the Framework in a storyline that's being called 'Agents of HYDRA.'

This plot line has been building over the course of the entire season, beginning with the hunt for the Darkhold with the help of Ghost Rider through being menaced my the recently-perfected Life Model Decoys. One by one, each member of the SHIELD team has been placed within the Framework, with Daisy Johnson and Jemma Simmons being the last to enter in an effort to rescue their teammates.

The only reason the Framework exists, though, is because Leo Fitz created the program of which it was based on. He attempted to create a program to help train SHIELD agents, but then evil genius Holden Radcliffe used it as a foundation, utilizing the Darkhold's mystical abilities, and created the Framework.

So, naturally, people are going to be pretty upset with Fitz when they find out he's partially responsible for their troubles, right? Especially his girlfriend Simmons, who is dead in this reality and therefore remains to be seen how she's affected when she enters the Framework.

Executive Producer Maurissa Tancharoen said that's something that will be explored in the upcoming episodes.

"That's a point we've hit quite a few times in their emotional spats together," Tancharoen said while speaking to EW. "It is something that we are going to explore even further."

Whether FitzSimmons and their relationship survive the upcoming slate of episodes seems to be a big point, especially as we've watched the two best friends become a couple over the duration of the show. If they really want to twist their viewers into knots, this is one of the best ways to do it.
