Agents Of SHIELD Producers On FitzSimmons' Future

05/16/2017 10:55 am EDT

The fourth season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has been quite a journey for viewers. It began by introducing Ghost Rider, then dealt with life model decoy imposters, shifted to an entirely different universe, and then returned home to do battle with an Inhumanly-powered, self-made demigod.

The journey has been particularly brutal for Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. Simmons hacked her way into the Framework and was totally aware of what was transpiring when Fitz, as his Framework alter ego "The Doctor," experimented on Inhumans, murdered a woman in cold blood, and ordered the airstrike that killed the Patriot. Now that they've returned, matters have only gotten worse since Fitz remembers everything from that life and feels guilty about everything else AIDA has done.

As the Season 4 finale approaches, fans are left wondering if FitzSimmons can survive as a couple.

"I think they still have stuff to go through," executive producer Jed Whedon tells ComicBook.com. "There's obviously a lot of love between them and I don't think they will ever love anybody else, but there's a lot of pain mixed in, so they have some stuff to work through for sure."

"Season 5 is just going to be called "therapy," executive producer Jeff Bell jokingly added.

Fitz and Simmon's love was strong enough to keep them together when they were literally a universe apart. Fans will see tonight if it's strong enough to withstand AIDA.

In "World's End," with the surprising emergence of Ghost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD's fourth season finale, "World's End," airs Tuesday, May 16 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they've ever faced – an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
