America #1 Review - A Hero For Modern Times

03/06/2017 06:13 pm EST

America Chavez is quite the breath of fresh air to those around her. A boundless mix of impulsiveness with charisma for days, Chavez has no time to be mired down in emotional issues, but ironically seeing her toil with those issues is one of the most interesting parts of her debut issue.

Spoilers for America #1 incoming, so you've been warned.

Chavez doesn't fit into your prototypical hero mold, though she has a resume that any hero worth their salt would be proud of. Writer Gabby Rivera gives readers a character that is undoubtedly sure of herself in outward appearance but struggles with the same internal dilemmas and doubts everyday people are accustomed to. She's at home when punching an alien lifeform, but the nerve endings are left vulnerable when the topic shifts to love.

She's a character that's needed in this day and age. Her sexuality is simply a facet of her character without becoming the sole definer of it. The same method is applied to her race, resulting in a multicultural character that doesn't feel like a checking of the boxes, but rather an embracing of the variety her namesake employs.

The lively artwork of Joe Quinones only helps in this regard, as this book is as visually inspiring as the lead character, carrying an energetic visual style that compliments the book's vision.

In short, this is a delightful way to kick things off for America Chavez, and if you're looking for something with a unique point of view, well look no further.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.
