Brie Larson Addresses Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman Comparisons

Now that Wonder Woman has found box office success, Marvel has a big act to follow with its 2019 Captain Marvel project.

Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers in the project, and when asked by ET if Wonder Woman's success increases the pressure for Captain Marvel in any way, Larson had this to say (via We Got This Covered).

"Why is there pressure? I don't understand why there's pressure put on women as if it's the most shocking concept ever that a woman can open a movie — it's like, it's kind of a tired concept. We've proven it for a long time, so I don't put pressure on in that way at all."

She's right of course, and in fact, Wonder Woman helped Captain Marvel more than anything according to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Thanks to Wonder Woman, the road leading up to Captain Marvel won't include the same tired questions.

"What it does do is go, 'Oh, thank God, because what the question would have been on this junket before that is, 'Do you think people want to see a female superhero movie? Do you think audiences are ready to go see a big ... Are you nervous about Captain Marvel being a big, the first female hero?'

"And I would always say no because there hasn't been a good one in a long time," said Feige. "There were, you know, 15 years ago, a bunch of bad ones. Did they fail because they were female lead movies? No. They failed because they were not good movies. I don't have to say that anymore. Thanks to Wonder Woman. Because it just blows that fallacy out of the water."

Marvel brought on directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, responsible for Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind. Now that directors are in place and the lead star is already hitting the ground running, more casting news should soon follow.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming are both in theaters now, and will be followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
