Doctor Strange Director Reflects On Ideas He Saved For Sequel

Scott Derrickson has ideas for a Doctor Strange sequel, but will fans ever get to see them?

While speaking to Cinema Blend to promote the DVD release of his Oscar-nominated film, the director said some ideas make the final cut and some don't.

"...Ideas come to you, and when you recognize they're good ideas, but they don't belong in the movie you're making, you bank then," Derrickson said. "In my experience with Marvel in general—and this is true on Doctor—but from talking to Kevin [Feige, president of Marvel Studios], I think this is true of all their movies. I don't think they ever make decisions to not do something good so they can save it for later."

Derrickson made it more about making one good film that's cohesive and thorough than it is to plant seeds for the future or to try and fit a lot of things into one film.

And as he stated to our own Lucas Siegel, he definitely wants to return for another round with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Sorcerer Supreme.

Derrickson went on to compare the MCU to the original Marvel Universe, in that it built organically from threads created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to include other contributions to the House of Ideas.

"I think the MCU is being built the same way Stan Lee built Marvel comics, which is just keep making them," Derrickson said. "Just keep moving forward one comic at a time, and watch it evolve. And I think that's working for them! It worked for Stan Lee and it's certainly working for Marvel and the MCU."

Doctor Strange will appear next in Thor: Ragnarok, and is also due to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, which began principal photography this week. Doctor Strange hits digital HD February 14, and DVD/Blu-ray on February 28.
