Doctor Strange Director Reveals Possible Villains For The Sequel

When Doctor Strange appeared in theaters last year, the mystical hero brought alone some terrifying baddies. If Kaecilius was terrifying enough with his zealots, then the dark being Dormammu pushed the blockbuster into a new level of creepy. The villain duo gave plenty of impetus to Doctor Strange's origin tale, and fans will get to see the sorcerer take on other opponents in the future. The hero is set to take on Thanos with other Marvel characters in Avengers: Infinity War, and Doctor Strange will get a sequel as well. Now, the director of the first film is speaking out about who he'd like to see the hero fight, and he's throwing out some familiar names.

Taking to Twitter, Scott Derrickson did a round of Q&A with fans. It was there a fan asked the director which villains he was considering for the sorcerer supreme's sequel. Here it what he had to say about the potential opponents:

"Possibly Nightmare, but he's a tricky villain to get right. And you can't tell the story of Doctor Strange w/out eventually dealing w/Clea," Derrickson wrote.

Of course, the two names are familiar one to Marvel fans. Clea is the on-and-off again love interest of Doctor Strange who rules over the Dark Dimension. As for Nightmare, the terrifying villain was originally meant to debut in the first Doctor Strange flick, but the mercurial baddie was hard to pin down. Last year, Derrickson explained why Kevin Feige and he decided to keep Nightmare out of the first movie.

"Kevin [Feige] made a very cogent case," the director told Empire. "The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough. It's already an exposition-heavy movie... Dormammu made the most sense. And he is the most present villain in the comics."

If Nightmare does show up in the next film, then Doctor Strange 2 will take a dark turn. The villain is the overseers of the Nightmare Realm and Dream Dimension. He has the ability to warp people on their most unconscious level, and Doctor Strange has faced down Nightmare more than once in the comics.

From Marvel comes DOCTOR STRANGE, the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. Before long Strange – armed with newly acquired magical powers – is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
