Generations: Wolverine And All-New Wolverine #1 Review - Two Wolverines Are Better Than One

Marvel's Generations one-shots have been a bit all over the place, but thankfully Generations: Wolverine finally delivers on the potential of the premise.

Spoilers incoming for Generations: Wolverine & All New Wolverine #1, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.

The premise of Generations has been uniting the classic and modern take on the characters in a story that spotlights what both have to offer. Thus far that hasn't exactly landed, but Generations: Wolverine breaks that trend with a meaningful character dive that could serve both well in the future.

Seeing classic Logan in action again is a surprisingly welcome sight. With Old Man Logan knee deep in X-Books right now, it didn't seem that meeting classic Logan would resonate, but I'm glad to see that is not the case. Writer Tom Taylor effortlessly throws Laura into Logan's world, and clearly defines the differences between the two characters in an organic way. You know, by fighting lots of undead ninjas. These are Wolverines after all.

While the introductions are made via combat, the best interactions are served in more personal moments towards the end of the issue. There's genuine emotion on display that has been missing from these one-shots, with conversations that feel authentic to who these people are. In fact, if the goal is to eventually bring Logan back, these conversations could even form the catalyst for future stories, and if that's the case, then the foundation already shows significant promise.

The story is well served by the artwork of Ramon Rasanas, who creates some brutally delightful fight sequences, including that fantastic fight towards the end of the issue. No spoiling who it is, but longtime X-Men fans will be genuinely pleased, and the fight definitely lives up to the pedigree.

It was wonderful seeing these two characters share the page once more, and better yet done in a way that didn't relegate Laura to the passenger seat. If you read one Generations book, make it this one.
