In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, things are always shaking up. Casting news seems to be teased every other week, and fans are always looking to Kevin Feige for more updates about the franchise's future phases. This year, the MCU will enter yet another stage as films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 land in theaters, but Marvel Studios is already looking ahead. And, according to James Gunn, the director says Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be part of the company's plans.

Recently, the director sat down for an interview with Complex where he talked about his new movie The Belko Experiment. It was there that Gunn was asked about his Marvel tenure, and the director was asked point-blank about a third Guardians film. When questioned if plans were in motion for the flick, here is what Gunn had to say:

"There will be a Guardians 3, that's for sure," he said. "We're trying to figure it out. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do really, that's all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing."

"You know, I'm going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I'm just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks."

Of course, fans have been hopeful that Gunn would be on-board for a third Guardians flick. About a year ago, the head of Marvel Studios did tell fans the company predicted the film would make its way onto their schedule. Speaking with io9, Feige said, "It is still a big chess board for 2020 and beyond, but certainly I would say Guardians 3 is one film that's up there. I don't know what exactly the order will be."

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
