Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Director Hints At Sylvester Stallone's Mystery Character

James Gunn definitely knows how to stoke the fires and keep the hype machine rolling. When it was announced Kurt Russell was cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the director kept the role under wraps for as long as he could. When it came out he was playing Peter Quill's father, and that it wouldn't be J-Son of Spartax but EGO the Living Planet, people were thrown for a loop.


Then it became a question of what the character would look like, whether he'd be an actual planet like his comic book counterpart or if he'd have a humanoid redesign in the MCU. The latest trailer (and a bunch of promotional material and merchandise) answered that question.

But now the focus shifts to Sylvester Stallone's role in the 3rd Most Anticipated Film on ComicBook.com.

Both Stallone and Gunn have played coy about Stallone's involvement, and though it doesn't sound like the most substantial role it does seem to have significance in the ongoing cosmic saga of the MCU.

Plus, anytime we get a Tango & Cash reunion, we have to take a moment to celebrate.

Rumors point that he could be a member of the Nova Corps or Ravagers—maybe even an Elder or cosmic entity— but Gunn has yet to confirm. But now he's saying it's close to being revealed (obviously, the film comes out in a month and a half) and that there are "clues."

While speaking with Yahoo! Movies about the Belko Experiment, the conversation inevitably shifted to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Stallone's involvement.

"I think people will find out very, very soon," Gunn said. "Look for clues and you will find out the character Sylvester Stallone plays."

The director said that Stallone recently went in to re-record some dialogue and added, "He's a fantastic character. It's a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe."

Gunn then spoke about the experiment of making the film with one of his childhood heroes.

"When I was a little kid I ran around the backyard pretending I was Snake Plissken or Johnny Rambo," Gunn said. "Now I'm working with Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone who were icons to me as a child. I worked with Kurt for 80 days, now he's 'Kurt.' But Sly, we worked for a few days on set… The guy cracks me up. He's a very, very funny guy and we have a good time together."

So there you go, internet sleuths. The pieces to the puzzle are there. Let's figure out just which Marvel character Stallone will be playing. Or, you know, we could be patient and wait? Up to you.

The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
