James Gunn Explains What Sequels Should Be About

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 proved to be a winning sequel for everyone involved with the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, from the studio to the fans. Its success may be a credit to the sequel philosophy of director James Gunn.
As Gunn explained to a fan on Twitter on Saturday, the idea that sequels need to be bigger to be better is a trap that many franchises have fallen into.
"Sequels are not about 'topping'," Gunn Tweeted. "That framework has destroyed whole franchises. Sequels should be about evolving."
This statement was in response to a question about whether Kingsman: The Golden Circle can top the church action sequence that took place in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Gunn had stated that Kingsman: The Golden Circle is "The future film I'm most excited about right now."
Gunn's sequel philosophy was certainly at work in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The film heavily focused on further developing relationships that were established in the first movie, specifically the relationships between Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Yondu (Michael Rooker), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper) and basically everyone he had become close to during the events of the first film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 currently has an 84.96 ComicBook.com Composite Score, the sixth-highest ComicBook.com Composite Score of any comic book movie. The film also has a 3.94 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Rating, making it the sixteenth-highest ranked comic book movie of all time among ComicBook.com user.
