As part of his "Guardians of the Galaxy pic of the day," filmmaker James Gunn this afternoon shared an image of Stan Lee sitting backstage on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, joking around with the director while a Watcher stands nearby.

The Watcher is, obviously, pre-visual effects so while he has the wardrobe on, he would be hardly recognizable as one of Uatu's big-headed race of aliens.

In Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, Gunn paid off a long-standing fan theory that Lee, who has made cameos in nearly every movie ever made featuring a Marvel superhero, was in fact playing the same character in all of them -- a single man who was perhaps a Watcher in disguise.

The movie revealed that he was not a Watcher, but he as working with them, reporting back the various things he saw and relating to them what he had been doing along the way.

It even created a minor continuity flub, by having Lee mention his Captain America: Civil War cameo, despite the fact that Guardians vol. 2 ostensibly takes place before Civil War did.

Still, fans loved the cameo, one of the most memorable that Lee has made.

Audiences can get more behind-the-scenes insight into Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital services now.
