Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has cast Jason O'Mara as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Season 4. O'Mara will play a character who is said to have Marvel roots going back to the 1940s. The casting somewhat resolves the cliffhanger mystery from the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 finale.

"Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency," Executive Producer and Marvel's Head of Television, Jeph Loeb told Deadline. "Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent."

O'Mara is an Irish actor whose past work includes In Justice, Life on Mars, Terra Nova, Vegas, and Complications, as well as a recurring role on The Good Wife. He is also the voice of Batman in the current DC Animation movie universe, voicing the caped crusader in Son of Batman, Batman vs. Robin, Batman: Bad Blood, Justice League: War, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Justice League vs. Teen Titans, and the upcoming Justice League Dark.

O'Mara is the second major cast addition announced for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4. At Comic-Con international: San Diego, Marvel Television announced that Gabriel Luna will join the cast as Ghost Rider, a.k.a. Robbie Reyes.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced and co-created by Joss Whedon and Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen. Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb are Executive Producers.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC for Season 4, in its new 10 p.m. timeslot, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016.
