Watch Neil deGrasse Tyson Debunk The Science Of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

America's favorite astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is a frequent guest and friend of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. For the latest episode he decided to forgo his usual spot on the couch and instead recorded a segment reviewing the big summer blockbusters hitting theaters.

Tyson turned his scientific eye toward Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for the new segment, explaining some of the more frivolous science fiction tropes. It's not like people go into these movies expecting realistic takes on space exploration and physics, but Tyson can be appeased if he's entertained.

Just don't bring up the time Quill floated without a space suit or helmet in the vacuum of space for a few minutes AND SURVIVED at the end of the first one.

"I think most sci-fi films that have stuff going on in space, they all have sound," Tyson begins. "But we've known for the very first movie of the Alien series that in space, no one can hear you scream. And if no one can hear you scream, no one can hear you explode either."

He said that Guardians of the Galaxy would be a silent movie for every scene set in space.

"I used to lose sleep over this, and then I realized if there's enough other interesting things going on in a big budget, epic, sci-fi film then you can distract me from all the science you're getting wrong," Tyson said. "So, a walking, talking tree, a raccoon that will insult you, a green woman; OK, we're there. Do what you want. I'll just sit back and watch."

Tyson is the type of nerd that seems like he doesn't allow people to have nice things without ruining them, but at least he has the self-awareness to recognize when something is in place for the sake of entertainment.

There's a difference between the sound effects in films like Star Wars versus those in 2001: A Space Odyssey and how they facilitate a story's impact. But it's fun to see Tyson poke fun at those fantastical elements.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now.
