Ryan Reynolds Predicts Logan Will Win An Academy Award

There have been plenty of superheroes over the past few years, and a slew of them have gone above and beyond at the box-office. Films like Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have raked in tons of cash last year, but none of its predecessors have brought home one of Hollywood's most coveted awards. The Oscars continue to snub superhero films in its major categories, but that may just change in 2017. According to Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds, there is one superhero film that might get top honors this year.

And, surprisingly, he doesn't think it will be Deadpool.

In an interview with Variety, Reynolds told the site that the Academy Awards may shift their views on superhero films once Logan hit theaters.

"'Logan' looks like a movie that might break that glass ceiling," Reynolds said. "I know first-hand that it's amazing. I've seen some of it. It's mind-blowing. It relies a lot on character."

Of course, there is still a chance that Deadpool gets a surprise bid for an Academy Award. 20th Century Fox has been pushing the mouthy merc towards award bodies, and Deadpool was even nominated for a Golden Globe last year. According to Reynolds, the NSFW thriller was honored because it turned the superhero genre on its head.

Speaking to Deadline, Reynolds had this to say about the Golden Globes nominating Deadpool. "It's important to note that in regards to Deadpool's narrative material, the film came along at exactly the right time when we (the industry) reached the peak of superhero (movies) and Deadpool was 90 degrees to it," he said.

"There's been a lot of superhero films that have been brilliant, and there's a seriousness and darkness to them. At the end of the day, it's about guys walking around in tights. Deadpool took these tropes and usurped them in inventive ways."

Reynolds and Warner Bros. are not the only ones who think Deadpool may be awarded a golden statue at this year's Oscars. Hugh Jackman has even said the raunchy film may pull a surprise victory. "When I hosted the Oscars, 'Batman' didn't get nominated, and everyone was talking about it," Jackman told Variety. "It's a stretch to say these are injustices in life — we are happy and making movies. But I love it when someone like Ryan gets recognized." He adds, "These big-budget or comic book movies are not easy to pull off."

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
