Official Spider-Man: Homecoming App Hints At Jackal

Marvel Studios and Sony are just a few weeks out from the premiere of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and hype is ramping up for the film. New TV spots and behind-the-scenes photos seem to hit the Internet everyday, but one new update has got fans buzzing. The official Spider-Man: Homecoming mobile app recently made its debut, and one of its features teases the appearance of a famous Spider-Man baddie.

Over on Reddit, a screenshot of one of the app's feature has been making its way around the Marvel fandom. The Spider-Man app lets fans look through Peter's phone and read his texts with Ned, his best friend. One of the exchanges sees Ned tell Peter "Ms. Warren wouldn't get off my back about you being absent again today."

"If I tell her you're sick any more times she's gonna call the ER," Ned continues.

Peter waves off the concern with a quick apology, but the namedrop of a teacher bearing the last name Warren has got fans curious. After all, one of Spider-Man's classic foes known as Jackal carried the same name.

A previously leaked cast sheet for the film confirmed Spider-Man: Homecoming would feature a Ms. Warren. Selenis Leyva will play the character. Judging by Ned's text to Peter, the teacher does not seem to fond of the teenage vigilante, but it doesn't look like she is ready to swear a grudge against the boy. Ms. Warren may not be ready to go full-on Jackal yet, but that could be because the name isn't meant to allude to the villain.

While some fans think the character is a direct nod to Jackal, there is another explanation for Ms. Warren. During the Ditko era of Spider-Man, Peter did have a high school teacher called Mr. Warren. The new film may simply be using a genderbent version of the Ditko character. In the comics, it is Mr. Warren's brother who takes up the moniker Jackal.
