Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows Mystery Artist Variant Revealed

John Romita, Sr.'s cover from 1987's The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 in which Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker tied the knot will be "remastered" and recolored by Richard Isanove to provide a cover for Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1, Marvel Comics announced today.

The iconic image, which shows Marvel superheroes and supervillains squaring off in the background while the happy couple poses in the foreground, has been reprinted, repurposed and merchandised countless times over the years -- right down to being featured on the hood of a Matchbox car.

Renew Your Vows is an extension of a concept introduced during Marvel's multiverse-hopping Secret Wars event, telling stories in a world where Peter and Mary Jane are still happily together. In the main Marvel Comics continuity, Peter made a deal with Mephisto in Spider-Man: One More Day to surrender their relationship and all of his memories of it in order to save Aunt May's life.

The announcement comes on the heels of Marvel's revelation that the Mystery Artist Variant for an upcoming issue of Venom was in fact an upsized and recolored panel from The Amazing Spider-Man #298 by Venom's creator, Todd McFarlane.

Not long after Marvel split up Spider-Man and Mary Jane, DC's The New 52 reboot dissolved Superman's marriage to Lois Lane, making both characters younger in the new continuity. Last year, DC reintroduced the pre-New 52 Lois and Clark, still married, in Superman: Lois and Clark, and when that book proved a success they reissued Superman: The Wedding Album from 1997 as Superman: Lois and Clark Special #1 with a new cover.
