The Evolution Of The Winter Soldier In Concept Art

The Winter Soldier is the kind of character who often isn't meant to be seen, but when you do see him, he's instantly recognizable.

That's the result of a lot of hard work by the concept artists and character designers at Marvel Studios. A Redditor put together some of the concept art depicting Winter Soldier, a.k.a. James "Bucky" Buchanan Barnes, to show him in his various forms.

Take a look below.

Of course, the designers at Marvel Studios were all basing their designs on the original Winter Soldier design from the Marvel Comics universe. Bucky Barnes made his return to the Marvel Universe as the Winter Soldier in Captain America #1, released in January 2005. The Winter Soldier's look was designed by artist Steve Epting, one of writer Ed Brubaker's most frequent collaborators on what would become the modern era's definitive Captain America comics.

Nine years later, Sebastian Stan debuted as The Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (after playing Bucky in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger). Though he was an antagonist in that film, Captain America (Chris Evans) helped him shake his programming and came to his aid in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, leading Cap into conflict with fellow Avenger Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and splitting the Avengers into two warring factions.

In the aftermath of Civil War, the Winter Soldier is currently hibernating in Black Panther's (Chadwick Boseman) secluded African nation of Wakanda. He'll inevitably be called back into service when Thanos and the Black Order invade earth in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has an 81.73 ComicBook.com Composite Score, the fourteenth-highest ComicBook.com Composite Score of all comic book movies. The film also has a 4.18 ComicBook.com User Rating, making Captain America: The Winter Soldier the seventh-highest rated comic book movie of all time among ComicBook.com users.
