Thor: Ragnarok Director Compares Movie Against Civil War

Thor was absent for Captain America: Civil War and fans will finally find out what's he's been up to in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

Just don't expect it to look like Civil War in any way. While the previous Thor movies still heavily focused on Thor's acclimation to the human world and vice versa, Thor: Ragnarok frees the franchise from those restraints.

Director Taika Waititi recently spoke to the A.V. Club about his upcoming project, including what truly separates his film from Civil War. "Sometimes I would stop and think, I'm doing a movie that's got Thor and Doctor Strange and The Incredible Hulk and Loki and every character is so strange and different," he said. "Civil War it's just humans, humans with human problems. Ours is creatures and beings and all these sorts of really different characters. Again displaying human problems, but in outer space or in other worlds."

The squabbles between a sorcerer supreme, two god-like beings, and a Hulk demand a much different approach. Even compared to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ragnarok is a bit out of the box, and that is definitely a positive.

In Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first, he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!"

The cast of Thor: Ragnarok features returning stars Chris Hemsworth (Rush) in the title role for the fifth time; Tom Hiddleston (Kong: Skull Island) as Thor's adversarial, adopted brother, Loki; Idris Elba (The Dark Tower) as the Asgardian sentry, Heimdall; and Sir Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) again portraying Odin, Ruler of Asgard. Newcomers to the franchise include Cate Blanchett (Cinderella) as the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela, Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park) as the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson (Creed) as the classic hero Valkyrie, Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Skurge, and Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) reprising his role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment of Marvel's popular Norse Super Hero, is directed by filmmaker Taika Waititi. Kevin Feige will produce the film, joined by executive producers Louis D'Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on November 3, 2017.
