Venom Will Reportedly Feature She-Venom Host & Ultimate Comic Book Storylines

With Spider-Man: Homecoming swinging into theaters this past weekend, fans are wondering what elements of Marvel's many 'Spider-verse' properties will be brought onscreen. And now, a new rumor gives fans an inkling of what they could expect in Sony's upcoming Venom spinoff.

That Hashtag Show is reporting that the upcoming film - directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer - might feature a second Venom host. While Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is set to be the film's protagonist, the rumor suggests that Ann Weying will appear as the symbiote's second host.

Ann is best known in the comics as Eddie's ex-wife, who later goes on to adopt the symbiote, as well as the alter-ego She-Venom. The report doesn't indicate if the pair would already be separated within the Venom film, or if Ann will serve as Eddie's love interest.

Nevertheless, the potential of her character appearing in the film - and donning the titular symbiote - would excite many fans, and would help establish Venom's plot as something drastically different from the character's last big-screen portrayal in Spider-Man 3.

Another way the film might do that, it turns out, is through the origin of the symbiote itself. According to the same report, the film will possibly draw from Marvel's Ultimate universe, in which the organism was created by Eddie and Peter Parker's fathers.

If that were true, it would create some interesting storytelling possibilities. While Sony and Marvel have confirmed that Venom and Silver and Black are currently not directly tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the way Venom handles the Ultimate origin could easily leave the door open for a shared continuity.

Even though Hardy is significantly older than Marvel's current Peter Parker, 21-year-old Tom Holland, they still could form some sort of link between the two. Peter's father, Richard, has never been shown onscreen, meaning that Venom could include a scene of Richard and Eddie's father collaborating on the symbiote.

This could create a loose enough continuity to keep the films separate - but could also provide a small link between the two properties, if they were to eventually connect. Fans will just have to wait to see if these rumors end up being true - and what they could mean for the Venom film.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker are working on the current script for Venom. Venom will hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
