Daredevil's Vincent D'Onofrio Reflects On Marvel's Cinematic Process

With Marvel Studio's latest Netflix series, Iron Fist, set to debut later this month, the partnership between the two industry titans is once again a topic of conversation. Between Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and the currently-filming The Punisher series, many have praised the streaming platform for becoming a sort of well-oiled machine in terms of making content that Marvel fans are going to want to see.

One of the biggest players of Marvel's Netflix universe, Vincent D'Onofrio, recently gave some insight into how exactly Marvel and Netflix work together to make these shows.

D'Onofrio, who played Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in both seasons of Daredevil, revealed during his Emerald City Comic Con panel that the production process for the show was a unique experience.

"When you do a streaming show," D'Onofrio explains, "it's like doing a giant film. It's shot in a very cinematic way. And with companies like Netflix and Marvel, they really do take care. There are no slouches on those shows. Everyone is really top-notch and knows what they're doing."

D'Onofrio has been an avid supporter of his character, and of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, since appearing in Daredevil, leading many fans to wonder when he will reprise the role in other projects. While he has confirmed that he will not appear in The Defenders, Spider-Man: Homecoming, or The Punisher, D'Onofrio has hinted that his character will return in some way.

When speaking at ECCC, D'Onofrio explained that there is a certain complexity to playing the iconic character. "Wilson Fisk is just a ball of emotion. He can be a baby sometimes, but he can also be a monster."

The actor also revealed that one of his biggest challenges as an actor was learning to speak Mandarin for the series, which he said conflicted with his usual New York accent.

This was apparently the first convention for the 57-year-old actor, who is also known for his performances in Full Metal Jacket, Jurassic World, and NBC's recent miniseries Emerald City. When asked by the panel's moderator about what his experience had been attending the con, D'Onofrio reassured that it was a rewarding one.

"When you're working, you know that people enjoy what you do, but you think of them as a mass of people. When you're here, you get to see the individual people, and you hear their stories and how they're into what you do, and it individualizes it for you and makes you feel better about the job you're doing. I really appreciate it."

Marvel's' Iron Fist premieres on Netflix on March 17. Marvel's The Defenders comes to Netflix later in 2017. There's no release date for The Punisher as of yet.
