All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #1
Last week, Marvel Comics released All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1, a brand new series from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Aaron Kuder. The series stars the core Guardians of the Galaxy from the Marvel Cinematic Universe - Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Baby Groot - making it the perfect jumping on point for anyone who just saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy finds the Guardians caught in the middle of a competition between Grandmaster and the Collector to resolve who has the coolest collection of items and artifacts in the universe. The situation is complicated by the fact that Groot isn't healing back to full size and Drax has taken a vow of pacifism.
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1 is still fresh on comic book stands, and new issues arrive every two weeks. If you're a Guardians of the Galaxy movie fan looking to become part of the Wednesday comics crowd, this is your invitation.
Guardians of the Galaxy by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning
Perhaps you're not patient enough for an ongoing comic book series, even a biweekly one like All-New Guardians of the Galaxy. Luckily there's a long run of Guardians of the Galaxy comics to binge-read at your leisure.
This Guardians of the Galaxy series is what turned the Guardians into a film-worthy concept. Writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, referred to by fans as "DnA," brought together the rag-tag group of cosmic heroes that would grow to become on of Marvel's biggest franchises.
What makes this series perfect to read after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is that, where the modern runs by Brian Michael Bendis honed in on the core five from the first film, this original run features some of the extended cast members who debuted in the sequel.
Adam Warlock, the "Adam" teased in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 credits scenes, was a founding member of Star-Lord's Guardians of the Galaxy crew and much of the story sees the Guardians battling demons from Adam's past, such as the Universal Church of Truth and the Magus.
Mantis also joins the team later in the series, and it will introduce fans to other Guardians who may show up in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, such as Martyr and Bug.
Guardians 3000
One of the most exciting things about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was that it paid homage to the original Guardians of the Galaxy team from Earth-691, a possible future of the main universe, that was established in 1069.
In 2014, fan-favorite Guardians of the Galaxy writer Dan Abnett penned an eight-issue series reviving the old Guardians of the Galaxy team. Titled Guardians 3000, the new series brought back together Yondu, Starhawk (Sylvester Stallone's Stakar), Charlie-27, Martinex, and Vance Astro to take on the Badoon to save the future.
If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 turned Yondu into your favorite character and made you want to know more about the Ravager captains that got back together in credits scene, then Guardians 3000 is definitely a series worth checking out.
Warlock By Jim Starlin
If there was one question on the mind of every moviegoer leaving the theaters after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but isn't familiar with the Marvel Comics universe, it was, "Who is Adam?"
The answer is Adam Warlock, a key figure in the mythology and, as mentioned previously, a founding member of the modern version of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
However, before he was a Guardian, Warlock was many things. He was a god with the maturity of a child. He was a being that lived inside an Infinity Stone. He was destined to become the destructive being known as the Magus and lead the Universal Church of Truth. He was Thanos' conscience and opposite number.
This epic saga, which led up to the events of The Infinity Gauntlet are collected in a single volume titled Warlock by Jim Starlin: The Complete Collection. It's the perfect way to get familiar with a character who is sure to be a big player in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Avengers Assemble By Brian Michael Bendis And Mark Bagley
Let's be honest. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 only just arrived in theaters, but already ever Marvel fan hast heir sites set on next year's Avengers: Infinity War, which will bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to team up with the Avengers in defending the planet against Thanos.
If you're into that kind of thing, then you should check out Avengers Assemble, the eight-issue series by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley that brought the Guardians of the Galaxy to Earth to team up with the Avengers in defending the planet against Thanos.
Sound famliar?
Avengers Assemble was also a kind of back door pilot for Brian Michael Bendis's run on Guardians of the Galaxy, which was the second major run of the modern era of Guardians of the Galaxy. The run featured frequent guest Guardians including Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Kitty Pryde, the Thing, and Venom, and the story only just wrapped up. if you're looking for another long Guardians run to sink your teeth into, start here.
