Fate Of The Furious Poked Fun At Fast And Furious 6 In A Subtle Way

This weekend, the Fast and Furious films raced back into theaters as the franchise released its eighth films. The Fate of the Furious marks a new chapters in the high-octane series, and the movie was not afraid to reference parts of its past. Fans got a bit teary when Paul Walker's character Brian was referenced a couple of times throughout the feature, but there was one hidden joke towards the end which only diehard fans would catch.

If you have seen the Fate of the Furious, then you know the film brought back a few surprise characters. Fans already knew that Deckard Shaw would appear in the film as promos hyped the villain's involvement. However, audiences didn't know that the man's brother Owen Shaw would also make an appearance towards the film's end, marking the return of Luke Evans. Thanks to the villain's comeback, longtime fans of the Fast and Furious franchise were able to enjoy a funny dig at one of Owen's past blunders.

In the past, audiences watched as Owen went head-to-head against Dom's team in the Fast and Furious 6 film. The movie was categorically recognized for its over-the-top action sequence involving a burning plane and runway. In the movie, Owen tries to escape Dom having his plane head down a (impossibly) long runaway with the hopes of driving his car into its cargo bay. However, the ploy doesn't work out so well for Owen as he gets jettisoned out of the gaping cargo hold after Dom rigs the villain's car to crash.

The Fate of the Furious nods to the intense scene in a couple of ways. First, fans can see Dom do that exact same maneuver when he drives his car into a plane holding Cipher's team. However, the most overt nod comes later in the film when Deckard reunites with his brother Owen. The former tells Owen to not "go getting any ideas" because "you and planes don't have a good history."

Aptly, Owen agrees with the observation, leaving Deckard to push their charge forward. "There a**holes ain't gonna kill themselves," he says.

At least this time around, Owen doesn't wind up kissing any runway in his bid to help Deckard throttle a villain who stands to mess their empire up.
