The fate of the Furious has plenty of surprises in store for longtime fans, but one, in particular, will serve as a major turning point for the franchise. That, of course, is the fact that the main enemy in Fate is none other than Dom Torreto himself, forcing the rest of the team to gather some unusual allies to bring him in.

Torreto actor Vin Diesel recently spoke to EW (via Heroic Hollywood) about the big change in direction for his character, and how this sort of major change was necessary to keep the story relevant. "We have been talking the talk. Now it was time to walk the walk. Of course I was worried about going down such a dark road… but in some ways, there was little reason to continue if we weren't going to challenge our characters and the fans' faith in our saga."

Even in its eighth installment, the Furious franchise is still going strong, with Fate of the Furious currently holding a 3.55 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings. To keep that forward momentum, the part called for Diesel to go in some new directions.

"Very different. I knew that I was going to have to go to a dark place, part of the reason I returned to Xander [in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage] beforehand, to laugh a little onscreen before returning to Dom. It was an intense experience, to say the least. I only hope that the audience enjoys the journey despite the dark road ahead."

You can view the official description for Fate of the Furious below.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world's stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

For The Fate of the Furious, Vin Diesel is joined by a returning all-star cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell. In addition to Theron, the series welcomes newcomers Scott Eastwood and Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The film is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and produced by returning producers Neal H. Moritz, Michael Fottrell, and Diesel.

The Fate of the Furious opens in theaters April 14, 2017.
