'Godzilla vs Kong' Will Feature A More Rugged Version Of King Kong

Kong was already impressive in Skull Island, but according to Matt Wingard fans haven't seen anything yet.

Wingard is already getting ready to return to the Kong franchise, and in a recent interview with SlashFilm the Godzilla vs. Kong director revealed that fans will see a much different Kong than the one glimpsed in Skull Island.

"You see [Kong] in that film and he's just constantly under attack," Wingard said. "Things are going wrong and there's probably been lots of human intervention since then. It'll be interesting to see a more rugged, a bit more aged Kong in this film."

That older Kong will also be wiser, and as indicated in Skull Island, he should be much bigger in size. That's the only way he could really stand toe to toe with Godzilla, and Wingard said by the film's end there will be a clear winner between the two giants.

"I do want there to be a winner," Wingard said to EW. "The original film (1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla) was very fun, but you feel a little let down that the movie doesn't take a definitive stance. People are still debating now who won in that original movie, you know. So, I do want people to walk away from this film feeling like, Okay, there is a winner."

Wingard also looked to Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Doughterty for some early inspiration, as Godzilla vs. Kong is looking to be a big step up in terms of sheer scale.

"It was really cool. Part of me just wanted to go there and see what a $200 million — or whatever it's costing — movie liked like," Wingard said. "And I was kind of relieved to see that, at a certain point, movies can only get so big. That's kind of what I got from it. It was really educational, just from that perspective.

Godzilla vs. Kong currently enjoys a 3.43 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings. Godzilla 2 hits theaters on March 22, 2018, while Godzilla vs Kong is slated for May 29, 2020.
