Mad Max: Fury Road had a long and sordid journey to theaters. At one, point that journey was going to include a prequel anime that spotlighting Fury Road's Imperator Furiosa. Those plans never came to fruition, but Crunchyroll caught some footage on a Japanese television program that showed some of the early designs from the anime that never was.

The anime had lauded anime creator Mahiro Maeda on board. Maeda is known for his work on Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Studio Ghibli's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso, Royal Space Force – The Wings of Honneamise, GUnbuster and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now you can see his designs in the video embedded below, and the gallery at the bottom of the page.

You have to wonder if the anime would've ended better than the much maligned Mad Max: Furiosa prequel comic released earlier this month.

The images popped up as part of the marketing push for Mad Max: Fury Road in Japan, where it opened on June 20 under the title Mad Max Ikari no DEATH ROAD.
