'Spawn' Reboot Said To Be Low-Budget Superhero Film

Hollywood likes to give its comic adaptations hefty budgets, but films like Deadpool proved a modest amount of cash can go a long way. So, it's not surprising to hear the Spawn reboot plans to follow in the mouth mercenary's shoes.

During a recent interview with Collider, Jason Blum spoke out about Todd McFarlane's upcoming project. The producer, who owns Blumhouse Productions, will help bring Spawn to life for the big screen again. And, according to Blum, the remake will be a budgeted one.

"This Spawn movie is a kind of superhero movie, but a very different kind of feeling superhero movie. I like the idea of low-budget superhero movies. It's cool," he explained.

Of course, horror fans will get why Blumhouse Productions is a champion of the low-budget film. The studio has put out hit after hit with films like Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity. The films all went on to rake in major box-office bucks, and they all managed to do so with very modest budgets.

McFarlane has said in the past one reason he drifted towards Blum's work was because of his low-budget style. The Spawn creator told ComicBook that signing with Blumhouse Productions just felt right.

"Jason's brand with Blumhouse Productions has been these R-rated, low budget, scary, cool movies that are successful, and they work, and they allow you then to make another movie.

"The thought was always, and I never moved off it, was that I'd write, produce, and direct, which I will...So now I needed to surround myself with people that were going to make me look good and one of the first steps is to get a good production house - and it sounds silly what I'm about to say - that can make a low budget movie."

McFarlane said he already knew Spawn wouldn't be an adaptation for larger studios, saying, "Big studios have such a high overhead that the moment you walk in the door they go, 'We can't make anything under $24 million."

For fans, a low-budget Spawn film has it appeals. McFarlane will have the freedom to take Spawn in the direction he wants, but it also means special effects will have to be reduced. Spawn may not bring Al Simmons to the joints he frequents in the dark realms, but Blumhouse Production will ensure the hero can be as gritty as he wants. That - for fans - is a prize in and of itself

The new Spawn movie is still without a release date.
