Don't Expect 'Spawn' To Be R-Rated Like 'Deadpool'

Kicking off New York Comic Con 2017 with a bang, Todd McFarlane dropped all sorts of Spawn goodies during his spotlight panel earlier today.

Not only did fans find out that his Spawn reboot would begin filming earlier next year, they also found out the film is going to have a hard R-rating. According to McFarlane himself, it's not going to be the Deadpool-type of R-rated "with a couple F-bombs and a couple bare asses" rather it will be "dark and R-rated."

"It's going to be dark," McFarlane said at the panel. "I will have a shark in black water and if you're swimming he will come and you'll be gone and he will f**k you up."

Painting a beautiful metaphorical picture, fans of the gruesome anti-hero should be delighted the character's creator is both writing and directing the project. As the movie will be more indie-based this time around — McFarlane is apparently self-financing the production budget of around $10 million — it gives the character's creator ultimate control over the project.

Since McFarlane is financing it, he's partnering with Jason Blum's Blumhouse for distribution.

"The only things we need from them [Blumhouse] are distribution and marketing," McFarlane reiterated. "We don't need your input, we don't need your cash, we don't need your creativity – and they don't like those deals. They always want the budget to go up because then they have to put money in it and then they own it."

The new Spawn movie is still without a release date.
