Star Wars: The Force Awakens Setting Opening Day Record With Projected $130 Million Plus Box Office

Hot on the heels of the record-breaking Thursday preview night at $57 million, The total preview night plus Friday for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will land higher than $100 million, THR reports. Deadline's latest estimates are even stronger, putting Friday's total between $130-$145 million. That would absolutely demolish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's record in single day, opening day, and Friday of $91 million.
Deadline directly sources theaters in their estimate, who they say "are in complete awe" over the box office sales. If the movie keeps up this pace, it should have an opening weekend between $250-$275 million, outstripping any early industry watchers - or Disney's - wildest hopes. Disney, officially, is estimating "100+ million Friday and $200+ million weekend," but the way theaters and industry are talking has to be making people at the house of Mouse very happy.
With Friday, single day, opening day, and Thursday previews all beat, Star Wars can cast aside the wizards and focus on the dinosaurs. Jurassic World holds the rest of the relevant records, with a $69.6 million Saturday, $57.2 million Sunday, and biggest openings in both domestic and foreign, at $208.8 million and $316.1 million, respectively.
The Hobbit's $84.6 million December opening record was beat in less than a day.
