Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Lose 312 Screens This Weekend

In its fifth weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will become a bit less ubiquitous in theaters. For its first month in theaters, the film has stayed in the approximately 4100 theaters it debuted in. This weekend, it will lose 312 of those screens, or about 7.6% of its initial bow, according to Exhibitor Relations, a box office tracker.
That shouldn't slow the movie down too much, though, as it continues to speed toward one billion dollars in both the domestic and international markets. The film is still on pace to surpass the $2.187 billion worldwide cumulative gross of Titanic, though it may take a few more strong weekends to do it.
This weekend sees Ride Along 2, Universal's PG-13 comedy as the widest new release, but even with Star Wars' dip in total screens, Ride Along won't be anywhere close to as many theaters. Lionsgate's animated comedy Norm of the North and Paramount/Michael Bay's Benghazi flick 13 Hours also see wide releases this weekend.
Now that the four-weekend exclusive is up, some of the screens Star Wars loses will be IMAX screens, where The Revenant will take its place. Disney will be back on IMAX in two weeks, though with The Finest Hours holding the primary position in large format theaters until Deadpool two weeks after that.
