Universal's Monster Universe Will Be Different From Marvel & DC

The superhero genre is more popular than ever, and many other studios and genres have taken notice. This comes through in the number of all-encompassing tethered universes that have started popping up at a brisk rate, including a Universal Monsters universe. While they are taking notes in how things are linked together, there will be big differeces in their approach, including with their first entry in the franchise The Mummy.

Producer Chris Morgan recently spoke with Collider about the biggest differences between the two, as well as the similarities. "We live in a world of superhero movies now—and by the way, I love them and I see them all and I have a great time, but I can't identify with them as closely as I want to because I know I'll never be perfect like that. Whereas the monster movies are saying that everybody has darkness in them, everyone has secrets and things they are ashamed of and don't want to say or something that feels monstrous and dangerous about them. We're just kind of embracing that and saying, 'That's ok.' The films are just gonna be interesting, emotional, action-y, largely global sorts of films. I think The Mummy trailer sets up, in a really good way, kind of the tone of these films."

The Mummy and Universal's universe in general will be eyeing a darker tone than the previous Mummy films, and fans seem excited about it, as the Mummy currently sports a 3.40 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings. You can view the official synopsis below.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Tom Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond ), and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.

The Mummy opens in theaters June 9, 2017.
