Alien: Covenant Will Bridge Prometheus And Alien

2012's Prometheus film from Ridley Scott was said to be a prequel to his iconic Alien franchise but it ended with more questions than answers in several ways. The alien species' origin story was vaguely left on the table but the fate of the one remaining human character at the end of the film was also left uncertain.

Alien: Covenant appears to be bridging that gap between Prometheus and Alien, finally serving as the anticipated franchise prequel.

In an interview with ScreenRant at the 20th Century Fox showcase event (which screened several scenes from the movie), newcomer to the franchise and star of the new film Katherine Waterston opened up about the connection.

Here's what she had to say:

I think it has elements of both films. Like, it's got some aspects that are similar to Prometheus and then [it] does feel, in many ways, like a return to the original. But again, it's its own thing, too, and sometimes I think describing things in those terms limits it in a way and gives the audience information it's better for them not to have.

When I first saw the original Alien, I didn't even know what I was about to see, I had never seen a trailer or anything. My friend's older brother put it on to traumatize us — which it did – and I think that will be the most fun way to watch this movie too — with fresh eyes. So I don't like to give too much away about that. But obviously you look at IMDB, you know Michael Fassbender's in it, so there is going to be a connection from Prometheus.

Fassbender returns for not only his role as David from Prometheus but also a new sythetic being by the name of Walter.

With Ridley Scott in place for the film and keeping a movie only six months away from release a very tight secret, it's possible the fourth film he has expressed interest in may be the next piece of the puzzle revealing the events finally tying the prequel series to the original's doorstep.

When ComicBook.com caught up with Waterston at the same event (seen in the video at the top of the page), she simply said, "No comment," when asked if the film leaves any room for sequels. So, either the film takes us to the opening moments of the original Alien movies or the next movie(s) will.

As for whether or not Noomi Rapace will make an appearance in Covenant as her Elizabeth Shaw character remains to be seen. Covenant adds an entirely new cast with the exception of Michael Fassbender, having Katherine Waterston step into the presumably focal role as Daniels, with Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo and James Franco confirmed to join her.
