Alien: Covenant is director Ridley Scott's second attempt to tell a prequel story to his original 1979 groundbreaking sci-fi/horror film, Alien. The first attempt was the 2012 film Prometheus, and it goes without saying that that film left fans divided.

District 9 director Neil Blomkamp was ready to bring back Aliens stars Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn for an Alien 5 sequel, only to have that project sidelined by Scott's Alien: Covenant. Needless to say then, fans are now hoping that Scott delivers something great with Covenant - and now the first trailer is out to help make the case.

Earlier this month, Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis got to see an extended preview of Alien: Covenant, and he (like many others) felt it was a proper return to the sci-fi/horror form of the original Alien film. In this first trailer we get the tragic premise: a ship carrying a colony of human beings comes across a world they think is a new paradise, until the discovery of Prometheus survivor David (Michael Fassbender) serves as ominous portent to the death and destruction coming by way of the Xenomorphs.

From what we saw, Alien: Covenant will be full on gory with its kills, creating the classic edge-of-your-seat atmosphere that Alien provided. In short: the stumbles along the way (and delay of Alien 5) may have actually been worth it.
