Kong: Skull Island has dethroned Logan as king of the box office, earning $20.2 million on Friday from 3,846 theaters. Kong: Skull Island is projected to earn about $53 million in its opening weekend.

While that total is enough to take the top spot away from Logan, it hardly compares to Logan's $88.4 million box office debut last week. Kong: Skull Island also has a considerably higher budget to make up for, coming in at $185 million compared to Logan's $97 million.

Some analysts believed that Logan could hold onto its position at the top of the box office for another week, but that proved not to be the case. Logan brought in an estimated $10.5 million on Friday and is projected to earn about $36.5 million throughout its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to something around the $350 million mark by Monday.
