May is the official kick off to the summer season, but the movie industry gets started on the party well before Memorial Day rolls around!
This May is packed with perhaps the most promising lineup of big genre films that we've ever seen, covering pretty much every corner: superheroes, sci-fi, comedy, action/adventure and horror.
Obviously things will kick off in a big way with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 - but after that, there are quite a few films (including some dark horse potentials) that are worth heading back to the theater to see.
The only question about GotGv2 isn't whether it's going to be good or not, but rather whether or not it will be better than the first film. We've already seen it and let our thoughts be known - but fans are going to debating this question for the next few months, at least.
Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie has been something of a dark horse, but the closer it gets to release the better the finished product seems to look onscreen.
A recent test screening of the film has yielded strong buzz, so there's a growing chance that Son's of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam could have a hit franchise on his hands, as the King Arthur legend is especially popular in the Uk.
...That is, of course, unless Marvel and Guardians completely eclipse its release.
Snatched (May 12th)
Amy Schumer tries to continue her big screen success by teeming with Goldie Hawn for a mother-daughter comedy that looks pretty outrageous.
Of course, Schumer has as many haters as she does fans, these days, so it's debatable whether this onscreen teaming will have the impact that was hoped for.
Alien: Covenant (May 19th)
The Alien franchise has struggled to find its way back to the foundation it started on - namely, pulse-pounding sci-fi survival horror. However, after the misstep that was Prometheus, director Ridley Scott is promising that the ship will be set right with Alien: Covenant.
The story is straightforward: a ship full of love-struck couples looking to colonize a new planet have the good luck of landing on the doomed world where Prometheus survivor Elizabeth Shaw landed, and discover that the nest of Xenomorphs that are lurking there.
What ensues is a gory and savage destruction of the bonds of love by horrific monsters - and we can't WAIT to see it!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26th)
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has never been as strong as that first dark horse breakout films, Curse of the Black Pearl. And yet, with the fifth film in the franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, it feels like there is new life in all those undead corpses that Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar summons to conquer the seas.
Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow seems more restrained this time, while Bardem seems like a great villain. Add in big returns from Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightely, and Dead Men Tell No Tales might just be the reboot that PotC needs!
Baywatch (May 25th)
Summer now comes with an obligatory blockbuster comedy offering, and this year that offering is Baywatch.
It's pretty much everything we've loved from films like the 21 Jump Street reboot and Neighbors, rolled into one - and hopefully, that's exactly what the comedic payoff will feel like. Dwayne Johnson is riding high on Fate of the Furious success right now, and Zac Effron has reinvented himself from heartthrob to comedic heartthrob. Fun, laughs, sun and plenty of skin - this is the epitome of a "summer" movie.
