Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children Wins Opening Weekend

Tim Burton has made a successful return to the box office. Burton's latest, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, topped the box office on Friday and is set to win the box office in its opening weekend.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children earned an estimated $9 million on Friday, including $1.2 million in Thursday night previews. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is on track for a $26 million opening weekend.
ComicBook.com's own Dallas Jackson didn't love Burton's adaptation, but Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children has a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (64%) and a decent number of pre-sold young viewers who loved the original novels.
Based on the novel by Ransom Riggs, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children follows a boy named Jake who goes off in search of his missing grandfather and discovers Miss Peregrine's magical school. Jake learns about the students' special abilities and the enemy they've been hiding from and must help them fight a battle that has spanned time and space.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is directed by Tim Burton and written by Jane Goldman. The film stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O'Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.
Deepwater Horizon took second place at the box office in its opening weekend, earning $7 million on Friday, and is expected to earn $19.3 million over the weekend.
Deepwater Horizon is a biological disaster film based on the events of Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and is directed by Peter Berg.
The Magnificent Seven falls to third place at the box office in its second weekend. The remake of the classic western film earned 4.9 million on Friday and is expected to earn $16.3 million for the weekend, bringing its box office total to $62.2 million.
Rounding out the top five for the weekend are Warner Bros. Animation's Storks, which is looking at a $14 million weekend to bring its box office total to $39 million, and Tom Hanks' Sully, which will earn $8.4 million this weekend for a box office total of $105.4 million.
Suicide Squad rounds out the top ten this weekend, earning $1.8 million and bringing its box office total to $320.8 million after nine weeks.
