Peter Capaldi Announces Doctor Who Departure

Peter Capaldi has officially announced that he will leave Doctor Who following the upcoming 10th Season.

"It (the new series of Doctor Who) will be my last… I feel it's time to move on," Capaldi said.

According to the announcement, the 2017 Doctor Who Christmas Special will be Capaldi's final episode as the Doctor. Even with that in mind, Capaldi insists he's still dedicated to the role for the remainder of his tenure.

"I'm still Doctor Who!," Capaldi said. "We're doing epic stuff! I'm not done yet!"

Capaldi's status on the series has been in question ever since showrunner Steven Moffat announced he would be leaving after Season 10. The future of Pearl Mackie as Bill, the new companion debuting in Season 10, is unclear, but Capaldi departing alongside Moffat will give new Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall a clean slate and a new Doctor of his choosing to work with when he takes over in season 11.

Capaldi is playing the Twelfth Doctor. He took over from Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith in Season 8. After two seasons playing the Doctor, Capaldi has brought a more experienced and edgier, even grumpier take to the character when compared to his younger predecessors, Smith and David Tennant.

Moffat leaving, and now Capaldi, there's been some speculation of other characters from Moffat's era of Doctor Who returning for one last adventure. These include Karen Gillan as Moffat's first companion, Amy Pond, and Arthur Darvill as Amy's husband, Rory. Alex Kingston as the Doctor's wife, Amy Pond, is another possbility, though her story seemed to have definitively wrapped up in last year's Christmas Special.

Jenna Coleman's companion Clara Oswald and the immortal Ashildr played by Maisie Williams are probably more likely to return for the going away celebration, as are the members of the Paternoster Gang.
