Santa Clarita Diet Trailer: Drew Barrymore's Netflix Zombie Sitcom

Netflix continues to attract big names to some ambitious original series, and the latest is Santa Clarita Diet, a zombie sitcom starring Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant and geek icon Nathan Fillion!

As you can see in the trailer above, the series will take the traditional 'put-upon mom' sitcom trope and marry it to the story of Barrymore's character learning how to live (so to speak) in her new state as one of the undead. It'll be a bit too close to iZombie for some fans' comfort, but it's different enough, as Barrymore's character's zombification serves as a (somewhat thin) metaphor for a female middle-aged awakening.

The cast looks solid (including Vacation reboot star Skyler Gisondo), but the premise seems a bit too on-the-nose with its sitcom flavor; hopefully Santa Clarita Diet doesn't rest to heavily on so-called novelty of its premise for laughs, because in a world where Zombieland and iZombie exist, zombie jokes can wear thin fast.

SYNOPSIS: Joel and Sheila Hammond are realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction… but in a good way.

Santa Clarita Diet premieres exclusively on Netflix on February 3rd.
